PUNE: The advent of Henry Menezes is triggering off a football revolution in Mumbai and Maharashtra.
The Western India Football Association (WIFA) COO, a former international and Mahindra United player and manager before becoming GM at Mumbai FC, is at the centre of what could be a momentous happening for the game in the state, even the country.
From establishing an impressive office at the Cooperage, to launching the association's website, charting out developmental programmes for players and coaches' clinics, to renovating the Cooperage, including the laying of FIFA's artificial turf, it's all happening.
But the icing on the cake for Mumbai and Maharashtra will be the establishment of the Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS), the first of its kind in the country.
Talking to TOI, Menezes said: "We have had discussions with the management of MUSS and a consortium who have approached us said they will bear the entire expenses of setting it up."
MUSS will not be a residential academy. They will conduct football courses for kids aged between 8 to 18. Menezes said they were looking at a long-term association with MUSS.
"The players will have to complete the courses to graduate to the next level. The best of the players from here could then seek an entry into the AIFF Football Academy being set up by Fifa," added Menezes.
